Project background

A new approach to marine conservation

Marine conservation is often evaluated primarily from a scientific perspective. However, tackling more general concerns such as the management, planning, and financing of conservation projects is also necessary for effective field conservation implementation.

The MAVA Foundation sought to strengthen the protection of specific zones in the Mediterranean and improve the governance and management of marine protected areas through its funding program.

In light of this and with its support, BlueSeeds arranged three 5-day training sessions for conservation managers in the region on the sustainability and effectiveness of marine conservation initiatives in collaboration with the MedPAN network.

Through these training programs, Mediterranean marine conservation managers have been able to expand their knowledge and gain fresh insights into project management.

Project background

Training on the effectiveness of marine conservation

Three five-day training sessions on the sustainability and effectiveness of marine conservation initiatives were organised by BlueSeeds. These courses were designed to help managers in the Mediterranean region become more capable of overseeing conservation projects.

Participants were selected from a variety of backgrounds, including government agencies, universities, fisheries, NGOs, and marine protected areas from Albania, Algeria, Croatia, Lebanon, Montenegro, Morocco, Slovenia, Tunisia, and Türkiye. Each course could only have a maximum of 10 participants in order to foster interaction.

Participants learned over the course of five days how existing strategies to stop the loss of marine biodiversity are frequently unsustainable or ineffective when they disregard the significance of local stakeholders and communities or financial sustainability.

Our achievements

On the programme of our training courses

From management planning to the ultimate execution of activities, participants examined a range of topics related to the effective administration of marine conservation projects, such as stakeholder involvement, innovation, community entrepreneurship, fundraising, and the creation of self-financing mechanisms. Classes alternated between interactive lectures and group work.

To help participants better understand the working environment of applied marine conservation, BlueSeeds provided them with useful tools.

Partners from various disciplines (philanthropy, marine protected areas, and non-governmental organisations) also made in-person or virtual contributions to offer a variety of perspectives on the areas where marine conservation is applied.
